You have probably been told (and likely internalised) that you CAN’T have it all. You cannot have a leadership position AND a happy, healthy personal life. You cannot have a career with purpose and meaning AND get paid really well for it. You cannot get flexibility AND expect meaningful career progression.
This makes me absolutely FURIOUS because it’s complete and utter nonsense designed to keep women small and grateful for scraps.
Here’s the serious problem when you buy into this fallacy: you cannot BE and GIVE your best when you’re missing out on things that are important to you.
What Happens When Professional Women Accept Less
Let me spell out exactly what happens when you accept “you can’t have it all”:
Your health suffers as the compounded stress adds up. Women still do 64% of household tasks on average according to the OECD, plus carry the emotional load, on top of full-time careers. This creates chronic stress that impacts your health in very real, measurable ways.
You receive less respect and fewer career opportunities in the workplace because you don’t advocate for progression or negotiate salary. Price (salary level) and perceived value (your work) are closely connected. When you accept less, they literally value you less. This is fundamental to understanding women’s career negotiation advice: your willingness to negotiate signals your value.
You miss out on serious money over your lifetime. The compounding effect is staggering. As a women’s negotiation coach, I’ve run the numbers with hundreds of clients, and the lifetime earnings gap from not negotiating is genuinely shocking.
And here’s the kicker: your company suffers massively too when frustration makes you leave. The cost of replacing mid-to-senior level women is astronomical, yet organisations continue to lose talent because they won’t negotiate reasonable terms.
How Executive Career Coaching for Women Challenges This Lie
So let me be crystal clear about something: you absolutely CAN have it all. In fact, you MUST have it all to be and feel your best and do your best work, which is how everybody wins.
One of my WOA clients proved this beautifully. She was killing herself trying to balance a demanding director role with young kids at home, feeling like she was failing at both. Instead of accepting “that’s just how it is,” she negotiated a flexible work arrangement AND a promotion to VP.
Her productivity actually increased, her team performed better, and she finally had the bandwidth to be present for her family. That’s what happens when you stop accepting limitations and start designing your career on your terms through strategic career negotiation.
The Three-Step Framework for Negotiating Your Worth
The way to reach this is deceptively simple but requires courage:
First, mentally aim high. Dream about what work setup would allow you to do your best work. Inside our women’s career coaching program, I have a series of exercises that help you get specific about what you need and want, then test these out in real life. This is role co-creation at its core: you’re not accepting the role as defined, you’re shaping it to work for you.
Second, figure out which stakeholders are the real decision-makers in your career (hot tip: this goes well beyond your immediate boss). I teach exactly how to identify these people and then how to get them to the table for meaningful conversations. Women in leadership understand that career advancement coaching isn’t just about your direct manager. It’s about understanding the entire power structure.
Third, negotiate for those things using your feminine superpowers. I show my clients how to leverage gender norms (both internalised and external) to their advantage in these conversations. This is what negotiation strategies for women actually look like: not pretending to be men, but using your natural strengths strategically.
What Executive Women Who Negotiate Their Worth Actually Get
My darling, stop accepting the lie that you have to choose between success and fulfilment. Stop believing that wanting it all makes you greedy or unrealistic.
You deserve leadership roles that don’t destroy your personal life. You deserve meaningful work that pays you what you’re worth. You deserve flexibility that comes with real career advancement.
This isn’t naive optimism. This is strategic career negotiation backed by proven negotiation frameworks. The professional women I work with at Women of Agency aren’t lucky. They’re strategic. They’ve learned how to negotiate their worth without apology.
They’ve learned that asking for everything you need isn’t greedy. It’s smart business. Because when you have what you need to thrive, everyone benefits: your company gets your best work, your team gets your full leadership, and you actually get to enjoy the career you’ve worked so hard to build.
Ready to stop settling for less than you deserve and start negotiating for everything you want? That’s exactly what career negotiation coaching teaches. Not compromise. Not trade-offs. Strategic negotiation that gets you everything.
