I am a strong advocate for education as a way to sharpen your expertise, and I invest in learning every single year. But here is the crucial difference, my darling: I invest in learning to become better at what I do, not to collect credentials for display.
Too often, the professional women I work with in executive career coaching believe that an officially stamped qualification is the key to their next career move. Despite years of experience in marketing, sales, or complex project leadership, they feel that without a formal certificate to “prove” their competence, progression is simply out of reach.
This belief is understandable. Research consistently shows that women are expected to demonstrate near-complete mastery of a role before they are trusted with it, while Bob down the corridor gets promoted on potential alone. A formal qualification can feel like necessary validation in that environment.
But this belief system actively limits career progression for senior professional women.
Advancement Is Built on Execution, Not Paperwork
Advancement is not found in paperwork. It is found in practical execution and strategic career negotiation.
Let us take the supposed holy grail of business credentials: the MBA.
The assumption is familiar. Get an MBA and doors will open. Respect will follow. Promotions will come easily.
That assumption is wrong.
An MBA does not automatically secure a senior role. It does not demonstrate business acumen on its own. And most hiring managers I know, including myself, are not impressed by those three letters in isolation.
What Actually Drives Career Advancement for Executive Women
What actually drives career advancement for executive women is this:
- Building strategic relationships with the right stakeholders
- Understanding what they truly need
- Clearly demonstrating why you are the person who can solve their problems
That final point is decisive. People hire and promote based on perceived value, not diplomas. This is why women negotiating their worth through strategic positioning will always outperform those relying on credentials alone.
From EUR100,000 MBA to a Two-Level Promotion Without One
One of my career negotiation coaching clients was about to make this exact mistake. She was an individual contributor in IT, burnt out, and determined to move into leadership outside of her technical field. Her plan was to invest over EUR100,000 in a prestigious MBA to make that pivot possible.
Instead, she joined my women’s career coaching program at Women of Agency.
The outcome? A two-level promotion, a significant pay increase, and a leadership role in banking. No MBA required.
What changed was not her intelligence or experience. Through our career advancement coaching, she learned how to articulate her transferable leadership skills, manage stakeholder relationships strategically, and negotiate effectively. She learned role co-creation rather than waiting for a job description to match her CV.
Invest in Capabilities, Not Credentials
My advice is simple, and potentially very cost-saving.
Rather than investing in unnecessary qualifications, invest in learning how to communicate your existing capabilities to the right people, in the right way. In other words, learn how to work on your career, not just in it.
Master strategic relationship building. Learn to articulate your value with confidence and precision. Become highly effective at stakeholder management and negotiation.
These are the capabilities that create career breakthroughs for women in leadership, not letters after your name.
If this resonates, let us talk. Explore whether the Women of Agency program is right for you.
Stop investing in credentials. Start investing in capabilities that actually drive results.
