Why Smart Women Never Answer “What Do You Currently Make?”
“So… what are you currently making?”
Internal screaming.
We’ve all been there. That moment in the interview when they ask about your current salary. Here’s the uncomfortable truth from a women’s negotiation coach: the second you answer, you’ve surrendered your negotiation power.
Why This Question Is a Negotiation Trap
Think about it, my darling. Once they know your current number, everything slightly above it suddenly looks like a “generous increase.” Brilliant for them. Disastrous for you.
This isn’t just women’s career negotiation advice – it’s basic strategic positioning. Your past compensation has zero bearing on your market value in a new role. Different company, different responsibilities, different value proposition.
Your Three Strategic Responses
Unless you’re absolutely crushing it in your current compensation (in which case, share away!), here are your only acceptable responses when professional women negotiate their worth:
Response 1: Redirect to Role Value
“That’s actually irrelevant since we’re discussing a different role with different responsibilities. What’s the range you have budgeted for this position?”
Response 2: Cite Industry Standards
“Due to the competitive nature of my industry, I can’t share specifics. However, based on my research for roles at this level, I’m targeting £X-Y. Does that align with your range?”
Response 3: Acknowledge Underpayment
“I’m not comfortable sharing that since my market research shows I’m currently underpaid. Instead, let’s focus on fair compensation for the value I’ll bring here.”
When They Push Back
“But we don’t want to waste anyone’s time…”
Flip it back: “I completely understand! What’s the range you have in mind for this role? That way I can confirm if we’re aligned.”
This is salary negotiation in action. You’re not being difficult. You’re being strategic.
The Red Flag Test
Still insisting after you’ve redirected twice? Run.
How they treat you during interviews is your preview of the workplace culture. At Women of Agency, we teach women in leadership that negotiation strategies for women start with recognising when someone respects your professional boundaries.
Because here’s what executive women understand: a company that won’t discuss fair compensation without knowing your past salary isn’t interested in paying you what you’re worth. They’re interested in paying you what you used to accept.
Ready to negotiate your worth with confidence? That’s exactly what we specialise in.
